Doctor and Woman
Women's health is concerned with the well-being of women and with disorders
or conditions that are unique to or more prevalent or serious in women. These
may have distinct causes or manifest themselves differently in women, or have
different outcomes or interventions than in men.
Women's health recognizes:
- the diversity of women's health needs over the span of their lives, and
how these needs reflect differences in race, class, ethnicity, culture, sexual
orientation, levels of education and access to health care.
- that women’s health can be adversely influenced by complex social, political
and economic factors and their overall health of women is affected by cultural
background, education, relationships, their role in the workplace, and the
environment.
- that gender/sex-specific biology must examine gender differences in cells,
organs, or individuals to discover how these differences affect the systems
in which they function.
Women’s health needs encompass the provision of high quality health care in
general, as well as giving consideration to issues which apply specifically
to women. All women have the right to be treated with dignity and respect in
an environment conducive to privacy. This includes maintaining confidentiality
and providing information which enables women to make informed decisions are
key aspects of quality medical care.
